Yagnas (yagyas)

A Yagna is a remedial measure consisting of religious rituals usually done in a Hindu temple to propitiate the planets or their ruling deities. This ancient Vedic practice of giving offerings and chanting mantras with the help of the Holy Fire is typically performed by a Hindu priest, with a number of additional priests. The duration of a yagna depends on the type; some can last a few minutes, hours or days and some even last for years, with priests continuously offering to the gods accompanied with sacred verses. Yagnas can be done to address problems or to request the fulfillment of desires. Yagnas can be done either to one or more particular planets or to all nine planets (navagraha puja).
